Remain In Light, formerly Black Horse Productions, was incorporated in 2005 by young director and innovative stage designer Jonathan Hirsh. Its first theatrical production was the Canadian premiere of Neale Godfrey’s "Tap Dancing Through The Boardroom” which played at the Poor Alex Theatre in Toronto, prior to its off-off Broadway run in New York.
As Black Horse Artistic Director, Jonathan Hirsh quickly gained a reputation for work that is fresh, innovative and out of the ordinary. Toronto Star Arts Reviewer John Terauds wrote in his review: “Jonathan Hirsh has a nose for interesting, offbeat talent. We can only assume this bodes well for other stage projects he wants to bring our way in the future.”
Black Horse went on to work on several video productions, including a music video for well-known Toronto jazz musician DK Ibomeka. As well, in collaboration with LH Metropolis Communications, they quickly generated a documentary celebrating the thirty-fifth anniversary of the Alliance for Children and Television.
In 2008 Black Horse launched Remain In Light, its new theatrical production arm with its mandate to reinvent engaging classic plays with an edgy and relevant twist. Running in repertory were Samuel Beckett's “Waiting for Godot” and Daniel MacIvor’s “House.” This took place over four successful weeks at Toronto’s historic Paper Mill Theatre in the summer of 2008.
These productions firmly established Remain in Light’s place in Toronto’s artistic community. They enjoy a credible arts consumer following who eagerly await the next production.
Jonathan Hirsh currently attends the directing program at Columbia College in Chicago, where he studies under local Chicago directors: Andrea Dymond, Susan Padveen and Terry McCabe. Recently, he directed his first show, That Other Person by David Lindsay –Abaire.
